I'm a big fan of Margaret Atwood and the dystopias she creates. When I picked up The Year of the Flood, I didn't realize at first that it was a sequel to one of my favorite books (not only by Atwood, but in general), Oryx and Crake. Now, you can read TYOTF on it's own, it does stand alone, though it may be bizarre at times, and you will most certainly miss out on some inside stuff. You can read it on its own, but I would highly recommend picking up both. Here's why:

An excellent companion book to Oryx and Crake. I think they could probably be read in either order, but reading both really improves both books. This book gives the perspective of a few additional characters from Oryx and supplies some color for how the general population is living in this dystopian future world. Surprisingly, this book is also substantially more optimistic than Oryx. Recommended to readers of dystopian fiction and Atwood fans, and of course to anyone that read Oryx and Crake.

An enthralling book with some wonderful characters, it kept me turning page after page. Another excellent Atwood book. Now, to get hold of Oryx and Crake.
