If you asked me when I was about halfway through this book I would have said.... Eh, I could take it or leave it. I am happy to report that the book grew on me a little bit. I really enjoyed the last 100 pages or so.
I think the problem for me was this... Bray introduced so many different characters and their stories throughout the book. I don't know if you have ever seen the movie "Shorts", but reading this book reminded me of watching that movie. It was like a series of shorts (although not li

This book started so well. It is really my first foray into YA, and I have to admit that when I picked it up from the library and was told it was a YA book I really had no idea. I would have given this one 5 *'s --- it's an interesting, well-told story --- but for the last 30 pages. The last 30 pages were pure and total setup for the sequel, introducing new elements, partially explaining old elements, and telling the reader: if you want to know how these plot elements resolve, READ THE SEQUEL! *annoyance* This was unnecessary. I would have read the sequel anyways.

I loved Libba Bray's A Great and Terrible Beauty series, and while both were YA, this book was definitely aimed for the for a younger set and not as enjoyable to older readers. ...more

I think that before I tackle the second one I may have to re-read this. There's a lot going on in this book!

2016: Reread and actually read instead of listening to the audio. Enjoyed it much more this way!
