If you asked me when I was about halfway through this book I would have said.... Eh, I could take it or leave it. I am happy to report that the book grew on me a little bit. I really enjoyed the last 100 pages or so.
I think the problem for me was this... Bray introduced so many different characters and their stories throughout the book. I don't know if you have ever seen the movie "Shorts", but reading this book reminded me of watching that movie. It was like a series of shorts (although not li ...more

This book started so well. It is really my first foray into YA, and I have to admit that when I picked it up from the library and was told it was a YA book I really had no idea. And as I started reading it, I still had no idea why it was YA, save that the main characters were all around 18 years old. Anyway, the story built up really well and it was good getting introduced to the characters. I disliked the main character, Evie at first, but as she matured she got a lot better and I really warmed

Underwhelming. The story is set in the flapper era, and the language got me down after a while. I thought at one point if anyone said pos-it-ute-ly one more time I was going to throw the book away. I would have given this one 5 *'s --- it's an interesting, well-told story --- but for the last 30 pages. The last 30 pages were pure and total setup for the sequel, introducing new elements, partially explaining old elements, and telling the reader: if you want to know how these plot elements resolve, READ THE SEQUEL! *annoyance* This was unnecessary. I would have read the sequel anyways. ...more

I loved Libba Bray's A Great and Terrible Beauty series, and while both were YA, this book was definitely aimed for the for a younger set and not as enjoyable to older readers.

I think that before I tackle the second one I may have to re-read this. There's a lot going on in this book!
