Having read North and South and Mary Barton, I kind of expected the book to be in some sort of similar lines though less in volume & depth. Totally the wrong impression.

An amusing, tongue in cheek look at life in a small Victorian country town. Nothing much happens, but what does is vitally important to the women of the town, as due to the limitations of the day, their lives are occupied by trivia. The book gently reveals the class and gender boundaries of the time in which it is set, but also the strict, but sometimes unknown codes of etiquette. Not a challenging read, but there are depths to the snapshots of the womens lives.

I was expecting something weighty, but this book was much lighter and sweeter than I would have thought.
