There are nine different short stories in this compilation. I found the first, "Alphinland," to be rather bizarre, and it took me a while to catch onto the way in which the second and third are related to it. The other six stories are true stand-alones, and I enjoyed some of them much more. My favorites were the last two, the title story "Stone Mattress" and "Torching the Dusties."
