I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I didn't like American Gods much and expected that this would be pretty much the same for me. It wasn't.
Of course Neil Gaiman did one thing that is guaranteed to make me start the book with a smile on my face - he dedicated it to me! I always like that.
I also really liked the characters and the solutions they found for their problems. I especially liked Maeve Livingstone and Daisy Day.
So, if you are looking for a well-written, VERY different type ...more

I can't believe that I am giving a
Neil Gaiman book 2 stars, but I am. I finished the book not really satisfied. I tried reading the last chapter again to see if I liked it better the second time around and nope. I think it was because there weren't any real likable characters and the brother's attitude was terrible. It draws from the Anansi the Spider stories I remember from being a kid which did keep me reading, but I still felt like nothing was learned by the characters, which may have been t ...more

Fat Charlie Nancy has always been ashamed of his dad. When his dad dies Charlie discovers his dad was the god Anansi and that he has a brother, Spider, he doesn't remember. Charlie invites Spider for a visit and Spider causes trouble with Charlie's job and his fiancé Rosie. The book starts a bit slow and Charlie is rather annoying at the beginning of the book. Charlie grows and improves his character and the story definitely got more interesting as it went along.

I gotta admit it takes me months to finally finish the book. Not that it is not interesting enough, but I'm easily distracted. I am relieved now that I finally finished reading it *grins*
To me, the biggest challenge in the reading process is how to survive the first few chapters. But the story gets much intriguing the deeper I got. Especially after there's Spider. What a character! I hate spiders, and after "meeting" Spider, the more I hate spiders in general *lol* But in the end, you could hate ...more

I enjoyed reading this book. It was quite a bit lighter than American Gods and although the plot was a bit ridiculous and over the top, it was exactly what I expected from a novel about Anansi. The audible narration was excellent (the rare Gaiman book not narrated by the author) and I would recommend that format to those who like to listen to their books.

Another winner from Gaiman - strange as ever. I fell in love with Fat Charlie and Spider!
