Series note: This is book 3 and continues the ongoing storyline begun in book 1. It cannot be read as a standalone.

Really disappointed in this final installment... Read like a ledger of logistics for a war instead of a novel with complex plotting and characterization. SO BORING. 500 new recruits here, 10 rescued there, send these generals here, send supplies there, Fallon flashing around the world, meets new group of recruits, never read about those characters again...

New characters come and go, sometimes spending only a few sentences in the book, and half the time I don't remember who the names refer to. M Really disappointed in this final installment... New characters come and go, sometimes spending only a few sentences in the book, and half the time I don't remember who the names refer to. Most feel thinly characterized, like sketches. Everyone is either Light or Dark, good or evil, no shades of gray. The evil characters are comically so. Everything is Destined to Be, including apparently Fallon and Duncan's romance. It's never explained why Fallon is The One. The One apparently also just knows all magic spells in her head and overnight knew all the languages of the world. There was never any doubt that the Light would win, just an agonizing slog through the logistics and battles until the brief final battle which, obviously, they won with no casualties.

Basically, trash.

EDIT: Another thing that really bothered me is the way women are portrayed in this book. First, Duncan repeatedly angry-kisses/grabs Fallon without her consent, and justifies that "she didn't say no." This is literally repeated multiple times in the book. And justified because, apparently, Fallon did secretly want it. Second, enemy women are constantly referred to as "whore" and "slut." Allegra and her mate Eric are two of the main antagonists of the book, and are consistently referred to as "Eric and his whore/slut/bitch." Being evil does not justify these kind of sexual slurs. Evil men are allowed to keep their identifies, but the evil women become simply their "whore/slut/bitch"??? And lines like this: "It has always been so and it will always be. Brother killing brother over a patch of grass or a whoring woman." Because of course, if two men are fighting over a woman, she must have been slutty and led them both on. And the worst part? THIS WAS WRITTEN BY A WOMAN. ...more
