2.5 if I'm feeling generous. There were parts that I kind of liked, and there were definitely moments where I saw potential for a great story, or for me to like Ahdieh's writing, but those parts never overcame my general negative feelings for this book.

I really have to stop reading YA romance. They are all the same and they all leave me bored to tears or rolling my eyes or making my blood pressure rise.
Here is what they all have in common:
1) Heroine that is Too Dumb to Live
2) Male lead that has all the Power - seriously all the Money, all the Looks, all the Physical Strength
3) Sex & violence are combined in a disturbing way and later portrayed as somehow "romantic" - The hero rapes his newest sex slave at the beginning of this book during whic ...more

A beautiful retelling of 1001 Nights as I've always loved Shahrazad; being a brave and proactive heroine. However, this novel isn't about the stories and Shahrazad only trying to live for another dawn. In this novel, she also wanted revenge. And to know why. Why is the Caliph murdering his brides come the dawn.
