Fantastic cover though rather intimidating in size. I read it with a couple of friends over a period of 5 weeks with me pacing the read at 2 or 3 chapters per day. The first couple of weeks (approx. first 300 pages), it was really rather boring as nothing truly happens. Primarily, these 300 pages were used to set up this new intricate universe with a lot of politics, religion, and cultures described in detail. This is a long and complicated book with a lot of world building, and apparently took several years to write. It is difficult to imagine that it will remain a stand-alone tale. I found it an absorbing read, and a good one to return to in the evenings by the fire. It seemed to be a coincidence how the "red sickness" and the attitudes of people regarding isolation corresponded with the Covid 19 outbreak that the world is struggling with now- though plagues have been a problem since man arrived.

Another fantasy doorstop read this month. Loved this! Interesting magic, powerful female characters, good and bad dragons, separate stories that come together in the finale.
