I loved Ready Player One and was all set to love this book as well. But what was compelling and funny in the first book felt strained and overburdened here. The author used his best 80s/90s references in the first book, so had to reach for more obscure (and, thus, less nostalgia-inducing) references to fill out this story.

I received "Ready Player Two" for Christmas 2020, and it's taken me a few months to read. Part of that is due, of course, to the realities of living in a pandemic, when work and chores and responsibilities and play and social time and leisure have all lost any sense of physical separation and so they all blend into each other and are all diminished as a result. But some of my slow read of this book is also due to the fact that it didn't really grip me. The book has a lot more of the same stuff t

If you loved the first book, feel free to skip this one. You are not missing anything, I promise. I read this book despite all the negative reviews and all of them are dead on accurate.
The first half of the book is one giant info dump of things that happened after Wade won the contest ("And then this happened...and then that happened...and so then we did this...and then we did that..."). Then another quest with tons of '80s trivia that I don't give a shit about, and somehow this is no longer cha ...more

Gosh, the Intro and Chapters 9-30 are the pure nostalgic candy that we were all hoping this book would be. Unfortunately, the first third of the book sets up a tragically regressed Wade Watts after the events of Ready Player One. We barely get even a glimpse of the legendary Oasis in these first several chapters and instead we get entirely too much of Wade feeling sorry for himself. I actually DNF'd this but had to come back and slog through to satisfy my curiosity and get my fix of Art3mis, who

I liked Ready Player One so much that I guess I should've expected a second book to have trouble living up to my expectations for it. I didn't dislike this book, but it simply didn't grab me the way the earlier one did. I think part of the problem was all the references to pop culture: some I never knew, and many I no longer remember. So all the references to particular songs or particular scenes in a particular movie left me cold. If there hadn't been so many of those, I might've enjoyed the st

This started slowly, and I started to wonder if this was one of those sequels that should have never been written. It did pick up, but wasn't as engaging as the original.

When I read I try to take the opportunity to expand my horizons and learn about new people, places or things. This is why I rarely read books about education or middle aged white women. This book is certainly out of my comfort zone as it takes place entirely inside a video game . I'd like to say I learned more about how they work but I fear I am as inept as ever at making a character move and operating it's functions .
