This was a different read for me. I enjoyed the story. I thought the way the story was told could have been better. The author jumps back and forth between past and present. In some cases I think relevance is lost. The story is about a boy, Trond, who vacations with his father in the wilderness of Norway during the summer. He has a friend Jon who he “steals horses” with. This is a reflective tale, told from the perspective of an ageing man who has retreated to the wilds of Norway to be alone. He comes to realise that he knows his nearest neighbour from years ago, and this reminds him of a time when he was a boy living with his father, when one of the turning points of his life occurred. Like many of my reviews, this is also a book club selection. It's a simple story...split between a 60ish year old man in 1999 reminiscing about a summer when he was 15. Since Norwegian authors are few and far between, I recommend this book because one is expertly whisked away to Norway and a simple tale of fathers, friendships and, well, stealing horses. This is a manly book. Or a book about men. Or about a man. The book is a fast read and the reader is immediately drawn into the story of a 67 year old man who has sought out solitude and is reflecting back on his life and particularly on his coming of age summer with his father out at a summer house in a rural area.
