This book carried me from page one in an almost dreamlike trance with stunning stream-of-consciousness. Kudos to the writer and the translator.

This was a different read for me. I enjoyed the story. I thought the way the story was told could have been better. The author jumps back and forth between past and present. This is a reflective tale, told from the perspective of an ageing man who has retreated to the wilds of Norway to be alone. (Don't worry, no animals were actually stolen during the writing of this novel) I also read interviews online with the author and find him to b ...more

This is a manly book. Or a book about men. Or about a man. The book is a fast read and the reader is immediately drawn into the story of a 67 year old man who has sought out solitude and is reflecting back on his life and particularly on his coming of age summer with his father out at a summer house in a rural area. The women who appear in the book (infrequently) do not ever assume fully realized personalities; they are only there for their effect on the main character. But this is lovely rather ...more
