I loved this book. I love gothic literature and this was a fantastic modern gothic. It reminded me of the old gothic paperbacks I bought at used bookstores when I was younger.
(I've been drawn to idea of the gothic, that beauty in darkness since I was a small child, that and fantasy) But yes the used bookstore would have a bunch from the 60/70s for like .25 cents or so and I would by bag full (I wish I still had them) And Mexican Gothic has captured that same feeling.

I always struggle with audiobooks because I get distracted doing other things and stop paying attention. Hope that wanting to read this book so badly (and having some issues causing eye fatigue right now that limit both my screen time and even my ability to focus on the pages) will help keep me focused on getting past the first part of this story. My cover lust is fierce and I've heard so many great things about this book, I'm determined to finish her, one way or another!!

I didn't find much to enjoy in these pages. I like gothic novels; I can handle creepy just fine but I like character development along with it. These characters were flat and I didn't engage much at all with the main character. I was expecting a page turner and this was dreadfully slow. I just wanted to be done with it. I did like it enough that I wanted to find out the mystery and see how it ended. ...more

Noemi heads to the Mexican countryside to check in on her cousin who married into a well-to-do family from England. Their home is called High Place and it's a dark dreary house and the place makes Noemi feel uneasy. The Doyle family are also less than welcoming, and her cousin Catalina does not seem herself, and they keep her resting in her room.
The longer Noemi stays in the house the

This was a great, creepy, atmospheric Gothic horror story. Noemi is a character that is a bit shallow at the beginning of the story, but with a stubborn streak. I love how she grows throughout the story but does not lose that strength of personality. The story was spooky and scary and the biologist in me loved the explanation of the strange things happening in the house. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a creepy read. It was just the right amount of scary for me with ...more
