This review is apt to be one in the truest sense of the word "review" for me. Elements that belong to my favorite reads are there--Cornwall, time travel, historical fiction, 14th century, a touch of the plague, English country living. I liked the main characters, Richard in present time and Roger in the past. The back-story of the ancient house called Kilmarth is intriguing, as du Maurier based it on her own house. I picked this up on a complete whim and I am very glad I did. It was in the horror section of my local library which, having read it doesn't quite fit (for me anyway), as it seems more of a sci-fi/historical fiction combo, although there are some chilling elements that many may find terrifying. It follows Dick Young as he acts the guinea pig for his friend Magnus Lane for a new drug he has developed. This novel explores a fictional 14th-century history of Kilmarth, du Maurier's own home. It does so by having the protagonist pop back and forth between now and then, by use of a hallucinogenic drug a biologist friend had developed. Once one accepts that premise, the rest of book seems reasonable, and it was moderately enjoyable. However, I found I really didn't much care for the protagonist, so I had trouble caring about much of what was happening to him, in either time period. ...more
