The story follows two timelines. In 1940 while the Germans advance toward Paris, Estelle's mother makes her escape by ship to America with a sewing machine and not much else. The second story is set in 2015 with her granddaughter, Fabienne, who bit by bit in the story learns more of her grandmother’s convoluted past. At the end of the book, the afterward explains that some of the characters were real, including the vile and nasty Harry.
