The word that most readers and reviewers use to describe Dear Mrs. Bird is charming, and it is absolutely that. I found Emmy's soul-searching a bit irritating at times, but otherwise a very sweet and entertaining story. Loved the detail of wartime London. It's very much in the spirit of that time to consider Hitler a fool and the nightly air-raids inconvenient.

A nice little novel about friendship set in WWII London during the German bombings. The story has both humor and suffering. A good read, 3.5 stars.

Emmy wants to become a war correspondent but through a mix up on Emmy's part she ends up working for the advice columnist for Woman's friend magazine. The advice columnist, Mrs. Bird, refuses to deal with any unpleasant subjects so Emmy begins answering the letters and mailing back replies. I liked the characters, even the rather obnoxious Mrs. Bird. The authors use of Random Capitalization became Very Annoying. The story ...more
