Two time travellers harried by an obssessed patron of the university hellbent on reconstructing Coventry Cathedral had to juggle life in the 19th century Oxford with its modern version (plus some hairy trips to pre-Medieval (?) England), dealing with psychics, rare imported ornamental fish, jumble sales, and butlers. Throw in a dog and a cat and an absent-minded professor who forgets everything when his mind is occupied with catching a rare fish species and that pretty much describes the most li ...more

One of my favorite books. I like "To Say Nothing of the Dog" so much I've given a copy to almost everyone I know, along with the first several tracks of my amateur audiobook version of it. That's right - I love the book so much I did a vanity audiobook recording of me reading the book. Connie Willis is a great author in general (though I found her most famous book, The Doomsday Book, to be a bit harder to read), but this particular story is my favorite of hers. So far.

The story involves a litera

The reader for this audiobook did a nice job. He used varying voices and accents for different characters and clearly found the story entertaining.

This story is an interesting mix of fantasy/time travel and a Victorian manners comedy. The author clearly put a lot of thought into the details of how time travel might actually work in a way that doesn't involve constant shifts to the future being created by meddling travelers. This was described in ways that felt relevant rather than just a lot of

Willis' Oxford Time Travel series are always fun adventures and this is no exception. This one takes us to Victorian England and has a lot of mysteries for the historians to solve. I liked the characters and the sense of time and place. The plot kept me guessing without being too technical with its time travel explanations. There were plenty of fun mentions of literary classics - but some of the discussions spoiled classic mysteries that I had hoped to read soon. Overall a fun read that was ligh ...more

🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧

I wasn't aware that the title of this book is a reference to a classic book! It is a book I've actually read but I wasn't aware of the subtitle or maybe I've just inconveniently forgotten it. Truthfully, I didn't have very high expectation of this book but it was such a delight! It was funny and the many literary references were interesting and oh so clever. I love the setting and the characters were marvellous as they stumble along trying to fix something (by setting up the
