I enjoyed this book more then I thought I was going to. The music and glimpses of the 80s and 90s made my heart happy.

Imagine that at the stroke of midnight every year on your birthday you wake up to find you have leaved to another time in your life--a year you have not yet lived--but that year might be 10 years in the future, or 5 years in the past.

This is what happens for Oona Lockhart. On her 18th birthday, at the stroke of midnight, she blacks out only to wake up 32 years in the future; physically she is 52, but she has just turned 19. She will awaken to find that she doesn't know what year she is in, and only knows that it will be a year she has not yet lived because she is living her life out of order. She does, however, retain all the knowledge she has gained from the years she has already visited. So, she might wake up and be 52 on year (but 19 on the inside) and wake up another year and be 31, but in that 31st year, she retains the knowledge that she gained while living in her 52nd year.

What will she learn about life and herself from these experiences? As she learns what has happened or will happen in this year, does she attempt to change her future by changing something? Or is her life driven by destiny or fate, where no matter what she attempts nothing really changes?

I enjoyed watching Oona grow as a character and learn how to live as a 52 year old, for instance, when she was truly only 19. Seeing her perspective on aging and how her perspective on relationships and love changed throughout the leaps was really a good read.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. But I found myself wanting more from the book. I wanted more chapters and to see Oona at more ages. I felt like the book simply ended too quickly, despite the fact that I enjoyed the ending. I guess I just wanted more before the age or the leap, as she and her family refer to them, that comprised the final section of the book. So because I felt a little bereft of from wanting more, this was only a 4/4.5 star read for me.

This was one of those books that I wanted to rush through to see how it ended, but at the same time I was enjoying the story so much, I wanted the book to keep going.

Oona is at a New Year's Eve party and is also ready to celebrate her nineteenth birthday when the clock strikes midnight. She's celebrating with her boyfriend, Dale, and they're getting ready to perform at the party with their band that's about to go on tour. Unfortunately for Oona, her life takes a drastic departure from the norm w This was one of those books that I wanted to rush through to see how it ended, but at the same time I was enjoying the story so much, I wanted the book to keep going.

She's celebrating with her boyfriend, Dale, and they're getting ready to perform at the party with their band that's about to go on tour. Unfortunately for Oona, her life takes a drastic departure from the norm when she passes out at midnight and wakes up in a mansion as a woman in her 50's. As she comes to find out, she lives each year of life in a random order, going back and forth across the years. Luckily she has her mother and her assistant, Kenzie, to help since they know about her "condition," but Kenzie is quite a bit younger than her early 50's self, so he's only around in her "later" years. The story goes through the first few years as she navigates her new life route, and the mistakes and joys that would inevitably happen by living life "out of order."

Oona makes plenty of mistakes, but they're ones that are all understandable. Wouldn't anyone try to rewrite their past to a certain extent if they had a chance for a do-over? But then what are the consequences if you are successful? Or is God or Fate or whatever you believe in controlling things to an extent that your attempts to change certain events are fruitless anyway?

Living life out of order is also a really interesting concept in terms of being able to appreciate the people in your life and the experiences you have. Obviously, knowing when and how you would lose some of your loved ones would be heartbreaking, but I'd like to think it would make me also appreciate certain people and things more. At the end of the book, Oona concludes that she doesn't think youth is wasted on the young, and that may be true. I think the real key to enjoying life is living in the moment and appreciating each year you have for what it is. Because regardless of how Oona moved through her life, she still had her ups and downs, her losses and her gains. But knowing what and who she had in a particular year eventually helped her to take full advantage of all she had in life. I like to think that's a lesson we should all learn.

And knowing how to play the stock market so you end up super rich later in life would be pretty cool too!

This is definitely a new favorite. 10 out of 10, and solid A+. ...more

Shelves: time-travel

An interesting premise even if it sounds messy; the back and forth and all around. It felt a bit like that too but then isn't life messy... I guess it's kind of like The Time Traveller's Wife in that you pop in and out different times with no one the wiser. It's a bit like coming of age too, I guess, though a crash course for 19yo Oona. I got a tad bored after 3-4 time periods but it's a fairly easy read and fun to travel through time with her a bit. ...more

On New Year's Eve, at the stroke of midnight, Oona will turn 19, but as the countdown begins, Oona faints and wakes up in her 51-year-old body. She learns that each year she will jump to a different chronological time. I picked this up after reading Tobia's review. Anything with time travel is a big yes for me, and I loved this story. I loved the premise! But I don’t think it was executed well. Or maybe I just didn’t like Oona. I definitely don’t understand her. A big disappointment for me. I didn’t even finish it.
