this book is, above all else, weird. i love simmons' Hyperion to death, and i could still see his style throughout the book... however, however. i will out myself as a bad english major by saying i am not a fan of mr. dickens at all. i find him ponderous; ironically, the narrator of 'drood' says at one point that dickens' failing as a writer is that he has excellent characters but no skill with plot, and i can't help but agree.

Horror is not my thing, and this book had about as much as I could handle. However, Simmons' writing is so engaging that it kept drawing me in, even though a part of me wanted to stop reading it. The book is very long, and many times I thought there couldn't be much left to happen -- but I was always wrong.

I don't know enough of the actual history of either Charles Dickens or Wilkie Collins to separate the fact from the fiction here. And the things I do know to be true -- the initial train disas

I've read a couple of books on Dickens recently and it has reminded me that I need to read more of his books (I've read a few, but not all). In this book the last part of Dickens life was skillfully rendered, mixing fact and imagination and creating a wonderful atmosphere. Wilkie was an interesting narrator for all his addictions. ...more
