This long and fairly sweeping book follows the life of Vivienne Morris, who narrates the story to us in the form of a letter. She's now 90 years old and wanting to explain who she was to the recipient's (Angela's) father. Vivienne is spoilt, selfish and idiotic at 20 years old when she arrives in New York. I hesitated to pick this one up because while I have loved Elizabeth Gilbert's non-fiction books, I never connected to her fiction. But this one was a winner.
On its surface, it's a coming of age story about a girl in NYC I the 30s. But really, the book is a celebration of women who defied the mold and found happiness on their own terms.
I rarely rate a book 5 stars because to me a five-star book needs to:
Have a good story
Be well written
Make me feel something
Actually be enjoyable to read.
