A nice quick , creepy read which gets even creepier after you turn the last page, put the book down, and start thinking about it...I was genuinely spooked, which doesn't happen much with the wealth of werewolf and vampire and forensic/suspense/exploding heads/rotting corpse books I read for fun these days! This is one pissed-off ghost, who has every reason to be pissed off. She's out for revenge and it makes her not the least bit of nevermind whether her chosen victims deserve it or not.

Susan Hill concocts a riveting horror story in this short, classic masterpiece. A perfect read for lovers of mystery and horror.
The story is chiefly about Arthur Kipper, a young solicitor who has a supernatural experience in an old haunted house. I think that the synopsis of the story can be read from the book's page itself. What I want to add is that this book is all about the way Hill handles it. Extremely taut, the story moves at a terrifying pace, building up and exploding into a shattering

Now this novel is what a good ghost story should be--atmosphere (foggy moors and marshes), mystery, a haunting ghost and curses. It is a solid spooky tale, with great description of the inner torment of the main character as the tale unfolds. Hill has managed to captivate the reader with a story that seems far larger than its mere 138 pages.

This was a slow paced intense horror/ghost story. Incredibly well written and descriptive this story puts you right there on the bleak wind blown coast at Eel Marsh and slowly and subtly increases the tension and suspense without the reader even noticing. The ending was slightly predictable only because you knew he was a widower and had suffered as a result of his visit to Eel Marsh. This book not only haunts you while you read but will also haunt you after, in the most subtle and heart wrenchin ...more

Good ghost story, and I feel it's one that will stay with me, as it is a vividly haunting tale. The narrator has a propensity for waxing poetic about nice weather and other simple pleasures, which could easily be interpreted as unnecessary rambling. However, I believe this is just a reflection of how greatly appreciative he is of things that help balance - and not disturb - his mental/emotional equilibrium... because, well, the woman in black disturbed just that and then some. I've seen the 1989 ...more

Spooky, quick read. It was easy to figure out, but was well written and had a bit of a surprise ending. I recommend for a bit of a scare!

I thought this would be a lot more frightening than it actually was. It was a good story but probably would have worked just as well as a short story.
