I don't know George Eliot very well. In fact, I've only ever read Middlemarch which GR kindly informs me was 8 years ago and... I cannot remember what it was about (yes, that memorable!). Silas Marner is a weaver who was exiled from his home and he secludes himself away hoarding up gold until one day his gold is stolen. Then Marner is given a gift which introduces him back into the world. I found the beginning to be a bit slow but it picked up once the robbery and subsequent events occurred.

I really enjoyed this classic novel. I didn't know much about the book when I decided to read it and I am glad I did. It was a heartwarming story about the power of love. It had a great sense of place, bringing the English country village to life. I will definitely move more books by Eliot up on my TBR. ...more
