The title says it all. McBride's mother was raised an orthodox Jew in the Virginia in the first half of the 20th century, but refused to buy into the racist attitudes of that time and place. When she married a black Christian, her family declared her dead to them, and she never told her children about them or her earlier life.

I loved the writing, the story, the people in the story, and everything. It wasn't a story but a telling of a life-two actually.

James McBride writes a memoir of growing up in a bi-racial family during the 1960's. He is honest in sharing his struggles of not fitting in neither the white nor black community. It's a poignant story.

A light quick read that leaves me with a lot to ponder. 3.5 Stars. Might be a good discussion book.
