HIstorical fiction- 1968 - makes me feel old! The author elucidates an important period that is underworked. Her characters, three sisters, 11, 9, and 7, are smack in the middle of the rising of the Black Panther movement in Oakland, CA. Their mother, a crazy poet, left them in NY with their father when the littlest sister was born. Great voice, characters are alive and vivid without a lot of boring description. A short example of author's way with words: "Learning the full truth about my name h

I wouldn't have predicted that I would enjoy a book featuring the Black Panthers so much! When I read the book summary before reading the book, I didn't think it would be a book that I would relate to much at all. But now that I've read this, I can see why it has won so many awards. After reading this, I definitely know more than I did about the Black Panthers and the Civil Rights movement in California in 1968.

I read this book as a monthly read for one of my Facebook groups. I found it to be an excellent look of what it was like to be black and young in the late sixties at the beginning of the Black Panther movement.
While a middle-grade book, I found it to be interesting and would suggest it to young and adult alike. Wonderful character, exciting action and some history make this award winning novel a good read.

Meet the Black Panters in 1968 Oakland, California when 3 girls travel there to meet their estranged mother and become involved in the civil rights movement. This book is well worth reading. The setting and time period are vivid. The characters are memorable; all three sisters have engaging and strong voices.
