- (#1 of the Reacher Series) "The transient Jack Reacher finds himself in tiny Margrave, Georgia, and is almost immediately arrested, if briefly, as a murder suspect. Imagine his surprise when he discovers that one of the victims is his brother, a brilliant U.S. Treasury agent. Reacher himself is no slouch; a former military policeman, he can dispatch villains with an astonishing array of weapons, including various parts of his body. In the company of a straight-arrow detective and a beautiful l

Jack Reacher: an impossibly clever fighting machine who appeciates his new found freedom and wants to live an untraceable life. He pays cash for everything, keeps moving, and no doubt wanders into many adventures after this one, the first of a series. He does seem to have a high body count by the end of the book, a lot of blood has flowed out of its original vessels and into the environment, and the one thing that might have tied him down from his wanderings is efficiently dealt with in the last

Jack Reacher has arrived at the small town of Margrave, Georgia because he rembered his brother telling him a story about a musician who died there. First time I read this, back in 2009, I obviously loved it - but not enough to write a review! This time, I still loved it (although perhaps not quite so much as I've dropped a star), but thought I'd say a few words. Although what can one say about a book which has been reviewed over 10,000 times?
I came back to Jack Reacher because I just need some pure escapism. What I love about him is that he always gets the bad guy in the end, he rarely gets wrong-footed, and he has an independence which is ...more

Three and a half stars.
I think I enjoyed this more that I expected. Bought this book on holiday when I needed a cruisey read, and it certainly delivered.
It's not the worst of mystery/action thriller that I've read, and I even enjoyed some of the twists. Some degree of suspension of disbelief is obviously required. I didn't get to be attached to the characters but I wasn't expecting to.
Overall, it made for a good read on a holiday, easy to pick up out down, but still with a good story! ...more

Jack Reacher is a great character and I did get into this much more than I expected. His judgment, intuition and physical prowess are a little too perfect and the relationship wind-up at the end a bit too speedy, but a good page-turner.

I've read all of Lee's Reacher novels save for the newest one [The Enemy] and this book is my least favorite out of the bunch. It took me about two weeks to finish it as I keep on putting it down. The suspense didn't really start until the last few chapters. Still it wouldn't put me off from reading more of the Reacher series
