This book is really a long (and sometimes boring) setup for book 3, introducing the two characters that will confront a terrible evil that wants to resurface: Lirael, a daughter of the Clayr and Prince Sameth, Sabriel's and Touchstone's son. For most of the book both are confronted with predestined futures which one doesn't want and the other really wants but seemingly won't have.

Neither character was particularly likeable, specially Lirael, who was continually whining about how she wouldn't ge

I am not sure if it is possible, but I think I enjoyed this one even more than the first. I loved how it carried on the story of Sabriel and Touchstone, but introduced new characters. Lirael is a wonderful anti-heroine who grows so subtly and so well over the course of the book. This book has no conclusions, you need to read the next one to get those. But with Mogget and Disreputable Dog, how on earth could you go wrong?

I'm enjoying this series a lot, and can't wait to get started on the third book, Abhorsen. I appreciated the warning by someone here on GR that I should have Abhorsen ready and waiting when I finished Lirael. That way the abrupt "ending" wasn't such a shock. So I'm passing on that warning. :)

I enjoyed this book even more than Sabriel, which I enjoyed a lot. I loved the dynamic of following the two characters - Lirael and Sameth - who each had their own journey to discover their strengths and wea

It's hard for me to decide how I feel about this book. I like it, but I don't love it as much as I would like to.

There's a lot more lore and worldbuilding in this one, so it was better than the first book in that regard, and I did enjoy learning more about the world, but I feel like the author does a lot of telling, not showing. Mogget and the Disreputable Dog are probably my favourite characters in the series (I'm not sure that's a good thing), but the whole point of their existence

Less of the worldbuilding from book 1 and the characters weren't as compelling either. The story has more plot holes as well including even more suspension of disbelief that there are other more hidden necromancers just waiting to act as macguffins. Not sure if I will continue the series. ...more

Mar 17 - Still reading! After almost 260 pages in the book, finally something happens because I'm getting sick of Lirael and Samreth's whinging.

Mar 20 - So all the action happened in the last 150 pages or so. I'm glad I persevered since I have Abhorsen waiting here as well. The book just felt dull in the first 200 or so pages, I didn't like Samreth's weakness and the character of Lirael was basically hanging in the air. I thought this was going to be a continuation of Sabriel and Touchstone's s
