One of the reviewers here on Goodreads, Liesl, recommended this book to its intended audience of young adults and "women who were avid readers as kids and want to return to the giddiness and excitement of reading an unfolding mystery told by a girl on the edge of womanhood." What a phenomenal story.
Gemma Doyle is a English girl raised in India who loses her mother tragically on her 16th birthday. She is then sent to finishing school in London. AGATB is her struggles to become a refined lady, fit in with her new classmates, come to terms with her mother's death, and her discovery of a mysterious power and a world called the Realms.
The story of the Order is well written and compelling, and Libba Bray has set us up for more stories and secrets yet to come. Oh, and I l ...more

I had heard a lot of good things about this book, and it didn't disappoint. Gemma is a heroine that is strong for the Victorian era, yet still trying to find a place for women in the world. Though not so wildly fantastic as the Twilight or the Harry Potter series, the subtly of the magic realms is part of the appeal of this seris, which I will continue on with.

This has been a very popular book at our library. I didn't care for the story - all the supernatural and magic stuff. It didn't hold my attention.
