When I first started LLL I had to put it down because I was still kinda slumping. I wasn't sure it was me or the book. It was me, this book is fantastic. The Locke is such an interesting character, a bloody hilarious great character.

Sooo many good quotes from this book. I have tabbed so much humor and sass. One minute I'm laughing then gasping with my hand covering my mouth because like a switch Scott Lynch can change the mood.

Can not wait to read the next book.

Okay, I have been reading a lot of really awful (but popular) fantasy since Harry Potter, and hated them all, and then this amazing book comes out.

Okay let's mix a solid Oliver Twist kiddie orphan gang tale with The Godfather with Ocean's 11 and set it all in some fantasy Renaissance type world that reminds me of Venice?! What?! And this works?!

Oh it works. AND it's not ridiculously sexist like a lot of the new fantasy I have tried to read.

Characters are great. Plot is great. I wanted to stay

Locke Lamora runs a gang of con men called the Gentlemen Bastards. Together they pull elaborate cons that target the nobility. When new forces come to town that threaten to destroy everything Locke cares about, he is forced into the con of a life time. I enjoyed reading this debut fantasy novel. The characters were fun anti-heroes that I was routing for the entire book. By the end of this book, I was absolutely hooked and it deserved 5 stars, but it was let down a little by what was, in my opinion, a slow beginning. It really took me about the first five chapters to get into it fully. The world created by the author was so complex that it was sometimes difficult to follow, but once I had got my head around Camorr and semi-Venetian feel of the city, I really began to enjoy it. Locke was very likeable because he was flawed and his companions and the lifestyle the ...more

I wanted to like this. I really did.

I won't deny that I can see what everyone else loves in this book. The world-building is fantastic, and the characters are interesting, fleshed out and believable. When I first started reading this (well over a month ago), I was intrigued by this boy, Locke, whose second nature was to steal, and this world he lived in. But there was nothing that made me want to continue reading.

I carried this book with me everywhere. Even to another city and back, hoping I'd
