Extensively researched, beautifully written, and so personal. This book lives up to all the high praise.
Annnnd two months later I finally finished! Hallelujah—it was worth every minute!
This is truly an incredible book. The subject matter is relevant and important to be sure, making it worthy of “required reading” status, but it is also beautiful in its own right as a work of art. The author tells the story of three Americans and how their lives were shaped by the choice to leave the South in what is called the Great Migration. 3 strong storylines + historical information made this book an experience. It broke down lots of historical, racial, and cultural constructions I had in my mind and for that, I’m grateful. It was as engaging and somehow, didn’t seem as long as I thought it would feel. So glad I finally picked this book up.
