There’s a little bit of magic in this book, and I don’t mean the kind with magic wands and spells. It’s enchanting and yet pulls on the threads of normal life. Family tragedies, a mysterious heritage and the strength to pull through the obstacles that life throws at us. Filled with colourful characters, the author Helen Pryke takes us on a tale of self-discovery and courage, and in doing so takes on tough topics. The Healer’s Secret is beautifully disturbing story. Not a cozy read, it deals with controversial topics like alcoholism, domestic violence and decisions that can turn the fate of a whole family. Strung out over several generations of women who pass their healer’s knowledge on from mother to daughter, the tale draws the reader into their troubles and heartaches. What an amazing journey! I’ve seen how detrimental life can be when a person carries an unspoken secret. The chain wraps tighter around the heart, squeezing until the person is a broken shell. I know of many families who do not believe in unburdening the soul. Secrets are meant to be swept under the carpet. What these families don’t realize is history tends to repeat itself.
