While very well written, this book read like the opening chapters of a book. We know the characters and the world they live in. We know how their societies operate, but we know little else. I liked it, I didn't love it but I liked it. Can't give it a higher rating because I feel I'm still in the middle of the story. Once I finish the trilogy maybe the rating will go up.

Great story! Glokta makes me laugh!
Such a good start to what I am sure is a big story, the characters are great and the action and fantasy element really engaging. The narrator is fantastic and I have to admit the end with Bayaz coming out of the bath and seeing the practicals in his room! that was awesome!
