I would love a story about what happens to Zitora after she resigns! :)

What Members Thought

I have this goal of taking notes on a book when I finish it, to make reviewing it easier. I know myself; I will jump straight into the next book, and things will get muddled, and then I'll forget half the things I want to say if I don't take notes. Sometimes my note-taking is really lax, but sometimes I love my nerdy, essay-writing self for being a note-taker, because then when I'm being a lazy ass and putting off writing a review (for no other reason than, say, a Firefly marathon. Again.), I'll

First Impression:
I've been a huge fan of Maria's since first laying my hands on Poison Study and have since then taken a road trip just to meet her, read everything she's written and simply just love her work. So, when I heard about this new series, I was psyched. I loved her dystopian but was aching for more fantasy since the end of the Glass series. When this one came out on Netgalley, I was excited and then Kate read it and said "You will love this book" and so I picked it up as soon as possi ...more

One thing I have to say about Maria's stories is they pull me in. I read the book in two days. When I started the novel there were a few fantasy elements I just couldn't wrap my head around and take seriously...however by the end of the novel things made sense and I could see all the set up and the intricacies that unfolded and still are to be unfolded and that I really liked. It fascinates me thinking about the different possibilities to come from what was introduced in book one.

Prelim Review: I was surprised by how much I kind of wanted to smack Avry at times. Some of the problems she has became problems because of her assumptions and stubbornness. She wasn't quite too stupid to live much of the time, but that didn't preclude her from being airbrained. If someone tells you 'Bad mercenary band is out hunting for you in this forest', the next logical leap of thought shouldn't have been 'let me wander aimlessly in this unknown forest'.

Probably closer to a 3.5 than a 4...
I enjoy Maria V. Snyder's books. They're fun reads.
That being said, I really wish they didn't all follow the same basic pattern (girl on the run falls for the guy she doesn't like/is out to capture her) and I wish the technology level of the world was better defined. Is it medieval? 18th c?

a very fun read, great villain, page-turning plot (most of the time), but I'm kind of bothered about the relationship between Avry and her man. If this book were "deep" and I knew it would explore that relationship more seriously, then I'd think it was a fascinating, but I expect that their relationship is going to be all hunky-dory now, which is unrealistic. I don't want to say too much and spoil it. If you've read it you'll know what I mean.

I really like Avery. Times are tough for healers, who are blamed for the plague that killed 2/3 of the population. Avery knows that to show her healing abilities means risking her life. She is the type of person though who is willing to risk her life to help save anothers. She gets swept up in the politics of the realm and she must decide who is worth saving.

this book has the same appeal to me as Miss Synder's Study Series: an elaborate fantasy world, a twisty conspiracy, an iron-willed heroine and her knight in not so shining armor. For a fantasy romance book aimed for teen to young adult I highly recommend this book.
