It starts of strong with intrigue. I really enjoyed the mystic of the story but as the books goes on it looses itself a little bit. As someone mentioned in reviews before, i did not get attached to any of the characters either. Something was missing.
The whole idea to write a book around real pictures is just fantastic and the photographs within are just so mesmerizing. They make you wonder what the real story behind them is and who are all those people.
I am looking forward to book two :)

Having read the summary, I started the novel thinking the book would be frightening, haunting, and would keep me up at night. Between the summary and the book cover, that impression isn't surprising. The book, however, is quite different. The pictures are, no doubt, a bit disconverting. But disconcerting does not equal thriller. I would have been pleased with a thriller. First Line: I had just come to accept that my life would be ordinary when extraordinary things began to happen.

It took me a while to get into this book.
I did like the use of the vintage photos to illustrate the book. The author did a nice job of weaving in those details to make the characters, well, more peculiar. Especially Jacob's father in the bunny costume and Horace in his top hat and monacle.
I read that Tim Burton is set to direct the film version. I think that's a perfect choice.
I do wish this was a stand alone book and not a series. I'm tired of trilogies. But that seems to be the model publish ...more

This is really a 3 1/2 star rating. I loved the bizarre imagery that was woven into the story. For the first 100 pages or so, this seemed like your typical "teenage boy struggles to find himself in the midst of tragedy". I'm glad I kept reading!
