I LOVED this book. LOVED LOVED LOVED. I enjoy public history and remember having a great professor in undergrad who made me interested in researching the history of homes. But nothing made me appreciate how something is made like this book. Only Erik Larson's writing, his storytelling, could bring to life the Chicago fair. Switching chapter by chapter, you learn of the politics and finances involved with the creation of the Chicago fair and the evil that lay within with murderer Holmes. I just c ...more

Definitely a fascinating book! I've wanted to read this for so long, mostly because of the HH Holmes backstory and now I've learned so much more about the Chicago World's Fair and how much of our present-day technology and products originated during that time. But Holmes is such a twisted shadow over the city during that time, and it makes you realize the more you learn - even about the details of the fair - nothing is ever perfect. ...more
