What Members Thought

I finally caved and read this book after it had been recommended to me by a friend (oh, and like, everyone on Goodreads). The first half of the book focuses on character building, which I like and then things get real in the second half of the book. It's a story about motherhood and choices, and just because you don't agree with someone's choice doesn't mean it was the wrong one for them. Assuming this will be turned in a movie at some point?

I was enchanted by the character descriptions, Ng's attentive way of describing Mia's art making process, and the way she honestly probed the many complicated angles of each character's personal journey. It's a deceptively simple book that crept up on me as I read on. I couldn't put it down.

A really well-written and multi-layered family drama.
Great character development. I love a book that can show many points of view without multiple first person narrators.
I especially enjoyed how much grey area there was in the plot.
Maybe part of it was because the story is set in 1998 when it was more common to see both sides of a situation and discuss them both civilly?
I also really loved the sub-theme of art and photography.
