I listened to The Lost Apothecary audiobook as opposed to reading it so I don't know if I would have been as annoyed by Caroline if I had been reading the story but I found her manner of speaking (in the way the author wrote her conversations and thoughts) very annoying. It seemed stilted. It was different with Nella and Eliza because speech was different 200 years ago but for what was basically a current day person, her lack of contractions and the way she spoke wasn't comfortable to me.

This sucked me in right away. I always enjoy the alternating time period/historical mystery genre, and this does it really well!
