My opinion didn't change. Still an amazing work.

I'll just add that this time I enjoyed more the human parts. The conflict of them needing a world, specially for those ship-born generations, against the will to survive of the spiders felt much better this time around.

As over these years I also played more space related games, including managing crews, constant repairing stuff, limited resources, and surviving around, or even colonist related games, and that aspect of the story Reread this in 2023

2018 review:

Absolutely amazing. I had no idea what I was delving into and it far surpassed every expectation I had.

Extremely creative way to portray evolution, how cultures form, adapt or cease to exist, the development of technologies, philosophies and societal norms. It's epic, as it spans thousands and thousands of years, and many generations, including a very creative way of dealing with the issue of linking with the characters and their development with such an approach.

And not just on the new planet. While new lifeforms evolve there, the humans are living in a spaceship. And due to various events, it is as if new rules and cultures rose and fell within that little "ecosystem", as again, except for a few characters, generations come and go, the news one being born on a ship.

The attention to detail to biology and zoology was really good, adding to the story without being overly technical, and thus it became another strong point. I probably learned more about some thing here than in science classes I had.

Another thing I really liked was the short chapters' structure. I really dislike books that have 500+ pages and are divided in 8-10 chapters with 50+ pages each. Shorter chapters allow for getting things to the point and more importantly, allow you to swiftly put it down to either absorb and contemplate what was read or due to other things getting in the way (no worse feeling than having to stop reading mid-chapter to absorb something or just to take a rest).

Anyway, all elements of a compelling sci-fi story with some fantastic extras thrown in. It's criminal it's not much more discussed or talked about. Criminal.

And while it's a clear standalone, I just found out now that there is a sequel coming (Children of Ruin). However, it will only come in May 2019. Absurd. Someone put me in deep sleep, please. ...more

This was a truly very interesting book, but a little too long for me. I am most drawn to books because of the characters, and I think it says a lot that the most compelling characters in here are the spiders. I felt for them things I didn't feel at all for all the humans facing eminent death and destruction. The plot could also have been a lot tighter, but I do think people who love world building will be dazzled by this one.

I was ready to give it 2 stars, but then the ending! So beaut ...more
