This novella is a reimagining of one of H. P. Lovecraft’s weakest tales, “The Horror at Red Hook. The author, Victor Lavalle, greatly improves it. I felt it was great, simply perfect.
First, he takes what was a generic (not part of the Mythos, the main baddie was Lilith), rambling story and makes it part of the Mythos, here we have not Lilith, but Great Cthulhu.
Secondly, we get to have a black person as the main character in a Lovecraft story, LaValle takes one of “those blacks” Lovecraft gleef ...more

And then we see why it has a dedicatory to Lovecraft. Damn, that was good, really good, a worthy tribute, with even some improvements.
First, it has dialogue and character development, which Lovecraft never bothered with as he was pretty bad at it. And even has small tidbits of humor here and there (Norwegian babies? Hah)
It also happens in a major city ( ...more
