This was the book I should have read before Dreams of Joy. This was another fascinating book about the Chinese-American culture and the political unrest in China from before the Sino-Japanese war to Mao and the impact it had on the Chinese in America. Specifically, the pursuit of communist influence in Chinatown by American authorities. This part of history, especially in China, is so mysterious. Lisa See scores again! I read this book in one weekend; it would have been in one day if I didn't need a little thing called sleep (and the strength to keep up with my child). Noboody captures the feel, smell, and taste of China (ancient or modern) better than Lisa See (and possibly Amy Tan). If I am not mistaken, there is a sequel in the works. As the story is not finished and there is much (much!) more to be told, I will beg Lisa See to write quickly.

I don't know why I can't give it 5 stars but it came very VERY close to it. There were so many times where I wanted to throw my book across the room because I was all too excited or angry with something in the book. Not in a bad way. I love when that happens. I was so animated throughout the whole book. I constantly made faces, whether happy or sad or whatever.
