Přečíst tuhle bichli byl poměrně oříšek, ale na druhou stranu jsem těch 61 % včera maratonovala za den. Styl psaní Laini je nádherný, snový, ale místy taky dost popisný. Musela jsem se na čtení Strange hodně soustředit, protože si Laini prostě ráda hraje se slovy a občas je to těžší. Ale byla to pecka. Jen se opět ukázala moje genialita a nějak jsem úplně zapomněla, že příběh začíná tím, že někdo umře (stejně jako v Tisícím patře), a v podstatě se jedná o scénu z konce knihy. This book was so strange! (Mostly) original high fantasy full of gods and monsters and poeple who could be both. I loved the beginning, first 60 pages were utterly amazing and I read it in one breath. Then something happened and the book got really strange for a while and I assume this is where all the DNF statuses came fr “And that's how you go on. You lay laughter over the dark parts. This book was so strange! (Mostly) original high fantasy full of gods and monsters and poeple who could be both. Then something happened and the book got really strange for a while and I assume this is where all the DNF statuses came from. BUT once you got over this part, you will fall in love. I can guarantee that.

This is the story of the orphan - Laszlo Strange, who is obsessed with this mythic city, no one believes actually existed. He becomes librarian (yaay so much love for books in this story), studies the legends about the city and hopes to find more, but then something amazing happens and his dream might come true.

Laszlo is amazing, even though I HATED his name. I hated most of the names in this book to be honest - they were either too long to remember, too normal or too similar to one another. But back to Laszlo - I love how innocent he is, which is also explained well, so it is believable - he basically spent all of his life in the monastery or library, hardly seeing a woman. He also haven´t encountered the evil of the world, so he believes in goodness, and I loved that about him. And the book broke his nose once, which is just perfect.

There is also the second storyline, which is centered about "godgirl" Sarai (much better name) and other gods. This is the part which was very weak from the beginning. It certainly could have been done better, so it kept people reading. BUT it got better and I started to like Sarai as well. She fights agains hate and that is very important. She is supposed to hate people, but she doesnt and tries to find a way to end the neverending circle of hate between the people and the gods.

Other gods weren´t as important, I was having trouble to tell who is who at the beginning, which was also part of the problem with the beginning of this storyline. Villain of the story is Myria and she is written well, but i didn´t carethat much about her.

The thing that bothered me a little was the issue with "gifts" every god has. This is so overused. Red queen, Shatter me, Carve the mark - those are only some that came right into my mind - all of them havethe same idea - that children are born with some kind of a gift, which reveals itself once the child gets older, some gifts are better than the others, until one gift is super special... etc. Same every time. So yeah, this book also has it. Fortunately, it is not the base of the story.

On the other hand, I very much appreciated the romance, which was done beautifully. And I ussualy hate romance in books. This time, there was no insta love, but it felt very real, I could almost feel nostalgic and thinking about how it was falling in love for the first time. Well done on this one!

So overall the story felt original, beautiful, writing was amazing and you should definitely give it a try!

This was me reading it for the second time and I was afraid whether I'll like it just as much as I liked it the first time. Well... I liked it even more.

It's a beautiful story of Lazlo, who follows his dream and visits Weep, the Unseen city, that he's been obsessing over his whole life. It's a story about Sarai, who has to deal with the horrors of her parents and hate of people because she a gods As a wise man, Ruza would say: "You have ruined my tongue for all other tastes... or rather books."

This was me reading it for the second time and I was afraid whether I'll like it just as much as I liked it the first time. Well... I liked it even more.

It's a beautiful story of Lazlo, who follows his dream and visits Weep, the Unseen city, that he's been obsessing over his whole life. It's a story about Sarai, who has to deal with the horrors of her parents and hate of people because she a godspawn. But mostly it's a story about young love, about compassion, about what it means to live not to be alive.

I think the main reason why I love this book is the well-developed characters. Every character has an excellent backstory, every character has a motivation and drive and demons and nightmares and dreams and wishes and it shapes them into beautiful and terrible beings who are so fascinating. Ehm, can you tell I like well-written characters? Lazlo is this very handsome and shy librarian, who I want to protect at all costs, his innocent and kind and strong. Sarai... Sarai has a lot of sorrow in herself, she wants to be young and live and discover and she's tired of hate and war and she's tired of being the Muse of Nightmares and she's tired of being lonely. She's scared of being vulnerable because she's been hurt far too many times and I just want to wrap these two in a nice dream place so they can be happy for the rest of their lives.

But she's a pro at creating the negative characters as well. I hate Thyon and Minya but I can understand them, I can see what shaped them, why they are the way they are and I can appreciate them without liking them.

It's not only them, but it's also the magical setting in which we are, it's the worldbuilding and the story itself, although it's not particularly happy all the time, and it's the message it sends. It's also the amazing writing style, dreamy and lyrical, and beautiful. I swear Laini Taylor has the gift of creating very powerful scenes through imagery and description, she has the power to show you the raw emotions going through these characters and that's so delicious to read.

It's true that this book broke my heart many times but I recommend it to anyone. It is slow but you'll cherish every damn word. And you'll have fun. There are so many awesome moments between Lazlo and Ruza and I can't ship those two enough. They are adorable and their friendship makes me so happy every time I've read a scene with them.

Now I can move to Muse of Nightmares which I was scared to read after first time reading Strange the Dreamer. I am hoping for a happy ending for all my favorite characters. I don't want to ugly cry anymore. ...more

od tejto kniny som si slubovala vela, kedze vela z vas ju ohodnotilo 5* ale toto bol ukrutny boj s nudou a zaspavanim nad knihou. poslednych 10 stran som musela docitat rano, lebo to bolo take onicom, ze som zaspala. chapete? koniec! poslednych 10 stran a vy to zabalite, ze sak co, aj tak o nic nepridem???

z niektorych tych opisov ako marhulovych chlpkov mi bolo luto tych marhul. tak ako dej bol miestami zaujimavy, tak rychlo ich autorka po 2 stranach vytesnila a presunula sa na dlllllhe a vlaaaa ...more

Přesně takhle si představuji dílo spisovatele, který si plní sen. Co je na tom kouzelné, je, že Laini nepotřebuje žádnou přiblblou oživlou knihovnu, kterých už začíná být přecpáno, aby vzdala poctu nikoliv knihám, ale příběhům samotným.

A já koukám jako puk, protože mi celá dějová linka přišla extrémně jednoduchá a nakonec je to jedna z mála knih, které mi za poslední dobu opravdu vyrazily dech. Wow.
