This is a heartbreaking story set at a tobacco plantation and weaves the story of Lavinia who is orphaned on board ship en route from Ireland to the NewWorld together with that of Belle who is a slave in the Kitchen House. Lavinia is raised with the slaves on the plantation and they take the place of her lost family, but because she is white, she is given an education and an opportunity to better herself. While not a slave, her options are limited and tragedy ensues.
