Two versions of a storybook marriage with a tragically different take. Lancelot/Lotto arises from a woman who played a mermaid for Florida tourists, thrives on charisma and charm in college, and is struck by love at first sight for Mathilde after a triumphant performance of a Shakespeare play. After many years with Mathilde as a helpmate and muse, he finds success as a playwrite. Late in the game another version of their life comes to us from Mathilde’s perspective. Was she right to keep her sec

I very much enjoyed the experience of reading Fates and Furies. It was a well-crafted book with a strong gradual reveal. I felt that I knew the characters in the first half of the book but, wait, along came the second half and all my opinions were subject to revision. Although I found none of the characters particularly likeable, they were vividly drawn, and my interest was caught by the peeling back of the layers of their lives. 4 strong stars

Back to write more later but I found this book full of flawed people, a lot of sexual content but overall, well written story however a little unbelievable as well. Bookclub read so I will wait until after we meet to discuss the book.

4 3/4 strong stars.. Best book I have read for ages. I was not surprised, as many others were, at the wife's 'real' character. Many clues I thought would be disclosed at the end, I either missed, or were left un-explained. No matter. LOVED IT !!.

Both of the main characters in this book have been rejected by their mothers; Mathilde as 4 year old and Lancelot as a teenager. In their marriage they cling to each other, meeting their respective needs but never being fully truthful with each other. Each of them have secrets in their past, and I can't help feeling that a bit more honest communication might have spared them each some pain, but then we would not have the story!
