I enjoyed Faith Erin Hicks short graphic novel Zombie's Calling and I'm pleased that her foray into a longer format really does pay off. While this story does have a touch of a ghost, it really isn't a true ghost story. Its a coming of age slice of life story about a girl who has always been homeschooled but is now trying traditional schooling for the first time because her mother has left. The emotions of all the family members are well done and the story is fast-paced and readable. I really en

Maggie is about to start 9th grade after being homeschooled her entire life. This is a big change and she's both excited and nervous. Luckily, she has three older brothers who will look out for her. Or does she? All her brothers have their own lives and are involved in their own activities, often too busy to spend time with Maggie. She begins to think being homeschooled may be better than going to school.

Maggie has never had friends other than her three brothers, and they were all home schooled up until their mother left. Now Maggie is starting high school and she is nervous about classes and making new friends-and the ghost who lives in the local graveyard. Maggie meets brother and sister Lucy and Allister and tells them she wants to put this ghost to rest, and she has an idea how. However, the plan does not go as expected, and her brother Daniel doesn't like Allister for some reason. The illus

A good graphic novel to hand to teens for the start of the school year. It reads quickly, the drawings are well done and teens will relate to the realistic story. The main character,Maggie, has been home schooled and is starting high school in a typical large city high school. She has three brothers, a police chief father and her mother has left the family for some unexplained reason. The ending had a few unresolved issues but I especially enjoyed Maggie's relationship with her three brothers.

What's with all of the ghosts in graphic novels? I'm not sure Maggie's ghost justified its purpose in an otherwise very realistic novel. Why can she AND her brothers see the ghost? Does it have a connection to their missing mother? Those two plot lines need more explanation, and while we're at it, it would be nice if we had even a hint of Alistair's feelings about Maggie. The art and emotions are strong, but this feels like a half-finished work.

This graphic novel did such a great job of capturing the drama of the high school years as seen through the eyes of Maggie, who enters high school after being homeschooled through the eighth grade. A fun read with a little paranormal twist, and perfectly worthy of the GGNfT accolade that it won
