“A Man Called Ove” by Fredrik Backman is about a curmudgeon. Ove is not just a grumpy old man, he has a story. (Opinions vary on how to pronounce Ove- I listened to the book and the reader said OOvuh, but here is a website with different advice... http://forvo.com/word/ove/#sv , but definitely not “Ohv” like the ending of “Stove.”

The book starts off with a bang; the bang of his new neighbors backing a trailer over his mailbox. The book starts off with a bang; the bang of his new neighbors backing a trailer over his mailbox. After this auspicious meeting they need to borrow Ove’s ladder, and little by little they insinuate themselves into Ove’s life, which isn’t an easy task.

Ove is a loner. “People said he was bitter. Maybe they were right. He’d never reflected much on it. People also called him antisocial. Ove assumed this meant he wasn’t overly keen on people. And in this instance he could totally agree with them. More often than not people were out of their minds.” He has strong opinions and isn’t afraid to share them.

Although he is more of an introvert than a recluse, Ove cannot stop himself from being helpful, no matter how hard he tries, and he tries pretty hard. He finds himself helping neighbors he never wanted to know in the first place and then inadvertently helping strangers he most certainly didn’t want to know.

I laughed and cried through “A Man Called Ove.” It seems light on the surface, but it has a depth and insight that you don’t expect. The book is written in a practical straightforward way, much like Ove himself. As I read this book I had a couple movies playing in my mind, Grumpy Old Men and Grand Torino. “A Man Called Ove” is a nice mix of these two themes...a highly opinionated man getting used to new neighbors and learning about himself.

I would suggest this book for those who like heartwarming books and anyone who might want a quick book to read. It has received wide praise both by Gering Public Library patrons and book critics as well. “A Man Called Ove” can be found in the fiction section at the Gering Public Library. If you like this book, the Gering Library has several other Fredrik Bachman books.
