It was a very sad story about a woman in the 1940s, who along with her husband, who had 6 boys. She wanted a girl so bad that when she had another child (a boy), she told everyone it was a girl and treated him as such, until he was about 8 years old. She had to come clean because the child began to ask questions. So she took her to the woods, put some coveralls on him and cut his hair, and then told everyone she is now a he. What happens when a mother secretly raises her 7th son to be her 1st daughter? Daniel Black explores this subject in small town USA in the 1940s. By tackling tough subjects like sexuality, gender identity, masculinity vs femininity, nature vs nurture, and African American family dynamics; Perfect Peace packs a mean punch. While the author did cave to stereotypes in some instances, the book was great overall.
