I honestly believe that this book couldn't have come out at a better time.
With all the controversial topics on the news and terms such as Police Brutality and Black Lives Matter and Racism all becoming more prominent, I believe that this book set itself up as a voice in the chaos of 2020 that spoke up against a lot of the awfulness we see on the streets and on our phone/TV screens. With praise saying it was like a 1992 version of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (which I genuinely did enjoy read ...more

The Black Kids is set in 1992 around the events of the Rodney King incident, the trial in which the officers who brutalized him were acquitted, and the riots in its aftermath in LA. The book tells the story of a teenaged Ashley Bennett who attends a posh high school and hopes to go to Stanford. Her family are fairly wealthy—both parents well qualified and in good jobs, they live in an affluent neighbourhood, the only Black family there, and she has a full-time nanny/governess, Lucia. Ok, well, this was quite an impactful novel that I really happened to enjoy. It does touch on many problems with society that we are still dealing with today across the world. It’s easy to look on at America and say oh look how bad they are, without reflecting on the situations in your own country, especially if you are outside the states. I think that a lot of BIPOC will be able to relate with a fair number of things in this ...more

4 stars!
I’ve got to be honest, I struggled a little bit with the pacing of this one as I feel like there was a lot of writing in it that didn’t necessarily need to be there. But other than that, this book was extremely educational.
If you’re the kind of reader who can’t get into reading non-fiction, I highly recommend reading this fictional one as a way to educate yourself.

this was an amazing story! i loved the narration and that it was set in the 90s but still felt super relatable today.

This was a pretty good debut novel that covers some very important and relevant issues. Although the story moved slowly at times and sometimes it felt like the author was trying to include everything, my final impression was that the author shows a lot of promise and I look forward to reading future books by her. I've been reading a number of fiction and non-fiction work recently that covers racial issues and while this may not be the best of the best, I liked how realistic it was. Ashley is a b

This was a fantastic coming of age story following Ashley as she navigates through life in LA during the early 90’s, we follow Ashley as she deals with High school, college applications and her sister taking part in the Riots during 1992. The writing was fantastic and highlighted friendship and family issues. Very well written and executed.
