Well, oof.

For a debut, this novel was brilliant. By any standards this novel was brilliant. Maybe I’m biased because I’m Chinese, but I doubt that.

What can I say, I really loved these characters, especially Roma and Juliette and don’t get me started on the ending few chapters plus the epilogue, because wowee, they were stellar.

And now I am super excited for book 2, Our Violent Ends which comes out in November this year. Cannot wait, cannot wait. Also, I’m terrified at the same time, because th ...more

WOW WOW WOW!

Honestly this book had me at Romeo and Juliet retelling based in 1920s Shanghai but I was not prepared for how much I was actually going to love it.

As a debut author, Chloe Gong is absolutely changing the game. Her writing is beautiful and her storytelling is flawless. The atmosphere she creates in this book had me gripped from page one and I cannot wait to see what TVD 2 will bring.

imagine the bare bones of the classic romeo & juliet story: two kids whose love, due to family reasons, is star-crossed fall in love anyway. now imagine romeo & juliet are in shanghai in the 1920s, and are the children of the leaders of rival gangs. and a virus is running rampant. there you have these violent delights.

I just loved this scenario, this characters and the way Chloe writes. And yes I am already finishing the second book, but trust me this one is perfect BUT It gets better!

These violent delights is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, it is a loose retelling but it does include two families at war with each other. The scarlets and the white flowers are the gangs from the families caught up in a blood war with many deaths on both sides. I loved the intricate world building, it had very strong character development and a very clever and well thought out plot.

I loved the intricate world building, it had very strong character development and a very clever and well thought out plot.

Juliette Cai is the Heir of The scarlets who has returned to Shanghai after time spent in America after she was betrayed by her young love Roma Montagov. Roma is the heir of the white Flowers. There is certainly no love lost between these two but after a Madness starts infecting the people of Shanghai the two must put their differences aside and work together to protect both sides.

This was a fast paced book with lots of twists that had me turning the pages at a fast speed. Every time I thought I had the plot figured out I was wrong.

This is a great fantasy retelling that I was actually pleasantly surprised to discover will have a follow up and had me screaming at the book with that shocking cliffhanger.

The idea of the Madness infecting the people and making them claw out of their skin was so well done, I feel that the side characters in this book were also a major part but I also thing that there is a lot more to discover about them and their pasts. I personally want more of Katherine who is juliette’s cousin as their is more about her that we are yet to discover especially in regards to another name, I feel there may be a relationship development between another two characters from Roma’s side of the family but I don’t want to say more than that as may be a spoiler. I also do not think we have seen the last of the madness or the creators. All of these are things that are making me so excited for more.
