Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares is a YA contemporary novel set at Christmas in New York. The book is told by both Dash and Lily’s perspective and I loved how distinct both of their personalities were. The story depicts two teenagers who are connected through messages sent back and forth through a red Moleskine notebook, even though they have never met before. It follows the development of the two characters, Dash and Lily, and the love story that unfolds.

Lily is a sixteen years old girl who absolutely loves Christmas. Her parents leave her and her brother for the Christmas holidays to go to Fiji. Their grandfather went off to Florida to see his girlfriend and Lily’s brother is only interested in spending time with his boyfriend, Benny. Langston, finds a way to keep Lily occupied–he creates a list of dares written in a red Moleskine Journal and left it in her favourite bookshop near her favourite book.

Dash is a boy who loves reading and hates Christmas. A few days before Christmas Dash decided to peruse the aisles of his favourite bookshop and near one of his favourite books he finds a red notebook. He is curious and decides to accept the dares written inside.

Dash and Lily are the total opposites. Dash never recovered from his parents’ divorce; Lily stayed at home while her parents celebrated their second honeymoon in Fiji. Dash revelled in being alone; Lily is scared of not having anybody. But they do have something in common – they love to read.
I loved Dash’s character more than Lily’s. Some people will certainly find him obnoxious at first. We’re introduced to Dash first as he discovers Lily’s red Moleskine notebook, instructing him to find a book on French Pianism. I enjoyed reading his POV. Dash is very charming in this unobtrusive way that makes being snarly so endearing.

The only aspect I didn’t enjoy that much was that even though the relationship between Dash & Lily was cute, I really didn’t see any chemistry. This book was cute and funny, but failed to make me care about the actual characters as opposed to the things happening to them.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. This was a ton of fun to read and a great book to read over Christmas. If you are looking for a light, funny, romantic read, I recommend Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares.
