Pretty good opening to the trilogy. New York is a wasteland with small numbers of survivors fighting a losing battle. Introduce a ship of African school girls turned warriors who have traveled by boat from The Free Women's Republic of Somaliland to New York to search for medicine. Chaos ensues. You can't get much more bloody action than a group of teenager warriors let loose in Manhattan. I also really liked that these girls are the most kick ass characters of the whole series. It was an interesting sort of zombie book. It makes sense that the third world would actually be better equipped to handle a virus that turns people into zombies. It was surprisingly...I'm not sure highbrow is the right word, but it was more than just blood and guts and there was some real thought put into how the world would have changed and how the few survivors would have to cope in order to survive. This was an ok read. It is fast paced, full of action, and sectioned to make for quick easy reading. As far as plot goes it was OK. I am more used to dumb dead zombies that kill you by being persistent and overpowering you. This novel presents a new twist in providing zombies that can think and plan.

Zombies? Zombies take over New York City? And there is one zombie who has maintained his intelligence by keeping his body cold as he dies. Oh my, I love zombie books like this. It gets a bit silly near the end but it's forgivable. Great zombie book!

The "Monster" series adds a new twist to the zombie genre. Wellington has some zombies retain varying degrees of brain function. Adds a new dimension that genre purists may not like.
