This was in a Humble or Story Bundle and it ended up being my random pick to read. Unfortunately, I didn't know until I was done that the author credits Orson Scott Card as one of his biggest influences. Yeah, there's that.
The premise was awesome. What would a diabetic do after the apocalypse? Manufactured insulin is going to expire eventually. The protagonist goes on a quest to figure out how to manufacture it so she can stay alive.
