I didn't write a review right after I read this and it's been 9 years... but I can say that I think of it sometimes. More often lately, as we develop AI and AGI. A study came out in June talking about "cognitive debt". The idea behind that phrase is that people become "become less capable of engaging in complex thought processes and creative ideation." It particularly would hold true for young people with developing brains.

Reading old favorite books is still scary. I never know if I'm going to be the same person. This was an old favorite. I'm not sure how I found it. I have coverless copies of The Hustler and The Color of Money which presumably came from 1984 on the Ga Tech campus. Perhaps I found mention of this book as a post apocalyptic by an author I didn't know wrote sf.
