I had wanted to read this for a long time, but it was one that just kept getting away from me....and perhaps that was for the best, because I was a bit disappointed. I love the genre, but this just felt so - I don't know, cold to me. I never really connected with any of the characters and I NEVER understood the Guilty Remnant or Laurie's defection there. Perhaps that was the point - that in a world where people can just be lost, there are no explanations, but maybe I had waited so long to read t

Great premise, solid execution. Unlike the Left Behind series (which I haven't read), this book uses the Rapture to set the stage for some fascinating conflicts for the characters, rather than having the Christian view of the Rapture be the point of the book itself. Oh--! I am fond of this book, which seems to belong to a subset of the genre: apocalyptic beach reads. The narrative structure owes a bit too much to channel surfing, and the Guilty Remnant veers toward device, but the book is a lovely and thoroughly enjoyable one, happily free of axes or grinding and surprisingly adept at tenderness.

A great example of how to write with the right amount of pacing plot and details. A horrible/wonderful handful of surprises. Ping pong, adult and teenage angst, cults: it's all in there.
