I had wanted to read this for a long time, but it was one that just kept getting away from me....and perhaps that was for the best, because I was a bit disappointed. I love the genre, but this just felt so - I don't know, cold to me. I never really connected with any of the characters and I NEVER understood the Guilty Remnant or Laurie's defection there. Oh--! I am fond of this book, which seems to belong to a subset of the genre: apocalyptic beach reads. The narrative structure owes a bit too much to channel surfing, and the Guilty Remnant veers toward device, but the book is a lovely and thoroughly enjoyable one, happily free of axes or grinding and surprisingly adept at tenderness.

A great example of how to write with the right amount of pacing plot and details. A horrible/wonderful handful of surprises. Ping pong, adult and teenage angst, cults: it's all in there. ...more
